Todd Blanche Should Not Be Attorney General
Hello Indivisible Citizens of Catawba Valley,
It’s another Take Action Tuesday from the ICCV Legislative Committee. Confirmation hearings for Todd Blanche to be Attorney General begin tomorrow, Wednesday, July 15. Blanche is currently acting Attorney General, but many current and former Justice Department officials believe he is the wrong person for the job. https://thehill.com/opinion/lindseys-lens/5959319-former-doj-employees-urge-senate-to-reject-todd-blanche-ag-nomination/
The confirmation process begins with hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee on July 15 and 16. With the death of Senator Lindsey Graham this weekend, the current membership of the committee is 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats. North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis (R) sits on this committee and is likely the swing vote. https://www.yahoo.com/news/politics/articles/eyes-nc-tillis-senate-returns-090000570.html
If Blanche passes the committee, the nomination will go to the Senate floor, where it is expected to pass.
WHAT TO DO
1. Please feel free to share this information with your family and friends. The more we educate people about what our elected representatives are doing in our name, the better we can protect democracy.
2. Please contact your Senators, especially Senator Tillis, TODAY, with the following message: Todd Blanche is not the right person to serve as Attorney General. His role as President Trump’s personal defense attorney, and his politicization of the Justice Department as acting Attorney General make him unsuitable for the permanent job:
a. He has driven the indictment and prosecution of political enemies of the president (i.e. James Comey, Letitia James, and others)
b. He was instrumental in "settling" Trump's case against the IRS, a settlement that has now been called “collusion” by a federal judge.
c. There is an ethics complaint before the New York State Bar Association alleging that he has violated rules of professional ethics and failed to competently represent the United States.
d. He has failed to comply with the Epstein Files Transparency Act by withholding documents and producing inappropriate redactions.
e. He oversees ICE and has played a central role in driving the administration's immigration enforcement policy.
3. Tell them to vote NO on his confirmation. DOJ leadership should re-assert the independence of this department, not corrupt it further.

HOW TO DO IT
You can reach your US Senators here:
- Senator Thom Tillis: (202) 224-6342
- Senator Ted Budd: (202) 224-3154
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT
The role of the Attorney General is to represent the United States in legal matters, supervise the numerous decisions that comprise the Justice Department, and to serve as an advisor to the president and other administrative officials on pertinent legal matters. However, the role does not include serving as personal attorney to the president or using the legal system to retaliate against perceived enemies of the Executive branch. https://www.justice.gov/doj/organization-mission-and-functions-manual-office-attorney-general
Over 1200 former Department of Justice employees sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee opposing Blanche’s nomination. They cite the loss of thousands of career employees since Blanche took the reins, including over a quarter of the department’s attorneys. Blanche’s loyalty to the president, not to the rule of law, is clear. https://thehill.com/opinion/lindseys-lens/5959319-former-doj-employees-urge-senate-to-reject-todd-blanche-ag-nomination/
Further, a group of national organizations, including The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, detailed the corruption and weaponization occurring at the DOJ under Blanche’s lead. They, too, sent a letter to the Judiciary Committee in opposition to Blanche’s confirmation.

Finally, on Monday, a federal judge called the IRS lawsuit that Trump pursued, and the “settlement” brokered by Acting Attorney General Blanche, improper. She went on to refer the involved attorneys, including Blanche, to the appropriate state bar associations for consideration for disciplinary action. https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/5966060-trump-irs-settlement-voided-federal-judge/
