However, we do the best we can to provide accurate information to support our recommended actions. We would like to clarify a statement from last week’s Take Action Tuesday where we wrote that the president initiated the war with Iran without consulting Congress for a declaration of war or for an Authorization for Use Of Military Forces (AUMF). While the statement is technically correct, as he did neither, there is some question whether an AUMF was required, since “(T)hree successive presidents have relied on the post-9/11 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) to justify military operations around the world. Some members of Congress are now chafing at the Trump administration’s assertion that it could apply to Iran as well.”

The ICCV Legislative Committee assesses that the likelihood of free and fair elections in November’s midterms is uncertain and is under severe threat. Please help in addressing ongoing efforts at voter suppression.

WHAT TO DO
Contact your elected officials with the following messages (see HOW TO DO IT below):
- Vote against the SAVE Act and recognize the right of all qualified citizens to vote.
- Stop casting doubt on the fairness of elections in the United States.
- Stop promoting measures that allow legislators to select their voters, such as gerrymandering, mid-cycle redistricting, and reducing access to voting (by eliminating mail-in ballots, reducing polling sites and hours, and enacting discriminatory ID laws).
- We want to know, “What are you going to do when President Trump declares a national emergency that (he says) requires him to intervene in the 2026 mid-term elections?”

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT
It is important to Donald Trump that the Republicans maintain control of the Senate and the House after November’s elections. He and his team have:
- cast doubt on the fairness of our elections for years.
- perpetuated the “Big Lie” (that the Democrats “stole” the 2020 election).
- incited the events of January 6, 2021.
- pardoned all convicted J6 defendants.
- repeatedly claimed that Democrats only win when they cheat.
- undermined the free press by defunding public media and facilitating purchase of media outlets by their allies.
- pushed for discriminatory voter ID laws and told Republican legislators that passing the SAVE Act “will guarantee the midterms” and “if you don’t get it, big trouble, my opinion.”
- called for more extensive gerrymandering via mid-cycle redistricting.
- created hurdles in the states for pro-democracy ballot initiatives.
- pushed to eliminate voting by mail, and reduce polling locations and available hours.
President Trump and those serving in his administration have been willing to ignore court orders, and he is immune from prosecution for any “official acts.” We all witnessed the events of January 6 and need no further indication of his capacity for inciting violence. We believe he will do whatever he thinks is necessary to achieve his desired electoral outcome. Trump is not lacking in imagination as he considers his options for doing so.
