Your Vote is Your Voice!

Hello Indivisible Citizens of Catawba Valley,

It’s another Take Action Tuesday from the ICCV Legislative Committee. A few quick updates on legislative activities at the state and federal level, then we will move on to our primary discussion for today, VOTING. 

THIS WEEK IN THE LEGISLATIVE ARENA:

The NC legislative calendars for this week are relatively slow. We know that the Senate passed its version of H 958, “Election Law Changes,” which is packed with voter suppression measures. Additionally, the state Senate moved some provisions to H 834, which is a partially good bill now, allowing extended time to cure ballots, but also allows for “court shopping” for a friendly Superior Court to address election related items. Since these bills were changed in the Senate, they return to the House. Both bills are on the House calendar for a vote at 4 pm today. At the federal level, the House is out until August 31. The Senate Judiciary Committee is meeting this morning and will likely vote to confirm Todd Blanche as Attorney General following his written withdrawal of the “slush fund” and limiting the “audit immunity” agreement. Be aware that this is not a binding “order,” despite Senators Tillis and Cornyn’s capitulation. WHAT ELSE TO DO, BESIDES CALL OUR NON-RESPONSIVE LEGISLATORS? 

DON’T JUST COMPLAIN – VOTE! 

With the midterm elections 91 days away, we shift our focus to election related issues.  North Carolina is heavily gerrymandered, and voting rights are under attack. It is critical that we get to the polls, and get our family, friends, and neighbors engaged in this midterm election. The first step is to check your voter registration. 

HOW TO DO IT: 

Go to the Board of Elections websitehttps://www.ncsbe.gov/registering/checking-your-registration

and click on the blue button: “Launch the Voter Search.” Enter your name and birth year to find a link to your registration information.  Make sure everything is correct. Then, encourage / help your family, friends, and neighbors to check their registrations also. We are erring on the side of caution by encouraging people to check their registrations monthly until the election.

If you have family or friends who are not registered, help them to get registered. Individuals who have a NC driver’s license, permit, or DMV ID can register online through the DMV website. Those who do not have one of the above DMV identifications, can register by mailing or hand-delivering a voter registration form to the county elections office. https://www.catawbacountync.gov/county-services/elections/voter-registration/

Various groups may offer voter registration drives over the next few months. There have been reports of misconduct on the part of some individuals conducting voter registration drives. https://www.ncsbe.gov/news/press-releases/2026/02/13/state-board-investigating-reports-misconduct-voter-registration-drive-workers

This is often a convenient way for new voters to register, and we do not want to discourage voter registration drives. On the other hand, it is important to register through trusted groups, such as NAACP or League of Women Voters, or to use one of the above registration methods. The important thing is to REGISTER AND VOTE. 

The deadline to register to vote is 25 days before election day, which in this case is 5 PM Friday, October 9, 2026. However, if someone misses the registration deadline, that person is eligible to complete Same-Day Registration during the Early Voting period. North Carolina does not allow Same-Day Registration on Election Day. 

Please feel free to notify the Legislative Committee if you have difficulty verifying your registration or want to identify other voter registration concerns, so that we can share this information with the ICCV membership. 

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT:

Polls show that the average American opposes the rampant corruption happening at all levels of government.  The cost of everyday essentials - think housing, groceries, gas – is rising at an alarming rate. Remembering those who gave their lives to preserve this country and its constitutional promises requires more than reflection. It requires participation.

I can’t state it any more clearly. If we want change, and we honor the sacrifices of those who fought for our right to truly representative government, then we must use our voice – VOTE!
