One Hundred Days

Hello Indivisible Citizens of Catawba Valley,

It’s another Take Action Tuesday from the ICCV Legislative Committee. As I began writing this on Sunday afternoon, there were 100 days until the midterm elections. When you receive it on Tuesday morning, we will be down to 98 days. There is a HUGE AMOUNT OF WORK TO DO! This may well be the most consequential election of our lifetimes.

We will soon be turning our Take Action Tuesday focus to election protection and the important races we are being asked to decide this year. This week, we are providing updates on a few outstanding pieces of legislation that are at the forefront, with one URGENT time-sensitive ask at the state level. Beginning next week, we will devote most of each writing to a specific election issue. But first, we are asking for your feedback. Your input is important to making sure YOUR organization is working for YOU!

1.     Are there specific election concerns that you would like us to research and address?

2.     How will you be involved in the electoral process this year?

3.     In what ways can ICCV carry out our mission as a “nonpartisan grassroots organization working together to uphold the Constitution and strengthen our democracy” provide support?

If you receive these alerts in your e-mail, simply reply. If you are reading this on Facebook or the website, you may e-mail us at iccvlegislation@gmail.com

Legislative Updates:

1.     SAVE America Act – The House passed a budget reconciliation bill on July 22, 2026 that included key provisions from the SAVE America Act, including grants to states that adopt the voter suppression measures included in the bill. Further, this bill includes funding for the ongoing war with Iran, which still has not gotten Congressional approval. Currently, the Senate does not have the votes to pass the legislation, and the Senate parliamentarian has previously ruled that the SAVE Act provisions have no place in a budget bill. There are less than 2 weeks until the August recess, so it is unlikely that this will be passed before then, which means it could not pass and be enacted before the midterms. But the president is still pushing as hard as he can. https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/house-passes-save-america-act-anti-voting-measures-in-budget-reconciliation-stock-trading-bills/

2.     The CLARITY Act is facing a possible floor vote in the Senate after some new ethics language was added. It’s unclear whether there are enough votes to pass since many Democrats feel like the ethics provisions are not robust enough. https://crypto.news/clarity-act-faces-senate-vote-despite-60-vote-gap/

3.    URGENT! The North Carolina Senate returned to Raleigh this week; the House is not expected back until early August, potentially next week. H 958, “Election Law Changes,”which passed the House prior to the recess, is on the calendar for the Senate Elections Committee at 11:00 AM TODAY, Tuesday, July 28. If it passes, as expected, we understand they plan a floor vote for 4:00 PM. There is a call to “Pack the Gallery” for both, if anyone has the time and ability to get to Raleigh today. We discussed this bill in some detail in June, link below in WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT. The expectation is that the Senate Elections Committee will make some changes to the bill. If that occurs, and it passes the Senate, it will have to go back to the House when they return.

WHAT TO DO

  1. Please feel free to share this information with your family and friends. The more we educate people about what our elected representatives are doing in our name, the better we can protect democracy. Encourage everyone you speak with to begin researching candidates and making plans to VOTE EARLY!

2.    Call your Senators. Tell them NO to the budget bill with SAVE Act provisions and NO to funding for an unauthorized WAR!

3.    Call your Senators AGAIN! Tell them NO to the CLARITY Act unless ethics provisions are more robust.

4.    Call your State Senators this morning! Tell them to VOTE NO on H 958. This bill, as currently written, is nothing more than a state level SAVE Act.

5.    Provide ICCV Legislation with your feedback as requested above.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

We have written previously about the SAVE America Act and about the CLARITY Act, and about the North Carolina H 958.https://www.indivisibleccv.org/march-24-2026

https://www.indivisibleccv.org/july-21-2026

https://www.indivisibleccv.org/june-16-2026

We are still at war with Iran, with now 18 service members dead. Congress has not authorized this war, but by providing funding, they show de facto approval. The House has passed both the NDAA and the above discussed budget bill. Whether either will be passed on the Senate floor before the August recess is uncertain. https://www.npr.org/2026/07/22/nx-s1-5903130/house-vote-iran-war-funding-reconciliation

The corrupt administration is hard at work with rhetoric, threats, and misinformation about the safety of elections. The erosion of trust in the electoral process could have the effect of decreasing turnout. It is critical that every eligible American exercise their Constitutional right to vote. There are significant concerns that the administration will try to disrupt the electoral process, with Democratic leadership doing tabletop exercises on how to handle various scenarios. https://www.newsweek.com/trump-midterm-elections-democrats-fear-nightmare-scenarios-12242254

We are rapidly sinking into autocracy. Overwhelming turnout is the only way out! This election is an “all hands on deck” event! Once again, we ask: How will you help? As George P. Schultz was fond of saying, “Democracy is not a spectator sport.” https://www.demdigest.org/democracy-is-not-a-spectator-sport-george-p-shultz-1920-2021/

Thank you for everything you do to protect our democracy!
